It is my experience that many companies require recruiters to only accept resumes in PDF format in an attempt to avoid viruses. Many free programs exist on the internet that convert DOC to PDF. This also avoids file compatibility issues.

My research has told me that companies have robust virus protection and are not afraid of downloading MS Word docs. All recruiters I've polled have said they prefer MS Word over PDF.

Despite having submitted resumes in .doc format as you suggest, I have been asked about half the time to please re-submit in PDF format.

The only take-aways that I have seen are:
If a preferred format is specified in a post, use that.
Otherwise, use .doc and be prepared to PDF it.
