Don't forget a thank you note if you DON'T get the job. Thank them for their time and consideration.
Yes, they got paid to interview you and you were out on a speculative limb on you own dime (so why spend even more of your precious time on a dead deal?), but that's not the attitude you want to present, is it? And you've already invested some time and effort in this relationship.
It's not about this one job. You've just made significant progress with people who have the power to hire you. They have other jobs. Other jobs will arise. They know other people who are looking to hire people like you, too.
New hires don't always work out. What seemed like a good fit sometimes isn't. There are many reasons why someone would leave a new job.
Do it because it will get you noticed and remembered. But, also, do it because it's the right thing to do.
You're the kind of person who does the right thing, aren't you? That's the kind of person I want to hire (and work with).
