No Form Cover Letters!

Most cover letters try to sound soooo professional that they border on sounding like a robot. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating, but you get the point. Stilted language just doesn’t cut it when you’re trying to impress an employer.

Wondering what I mean by stilted language? How about:

“Pursuant of our conversation, I would like to apply for...” (Come on, that sounds like a legal document, not a rapport-builder!)

Instead, how about: “It was great meeting you yesterday. I want to jump on your suggestion to send you my resume.”

Get the point? Use a friendly opener that’ll grab the reader’s attention and hold it. And remember: If your letter sounds stiff as a board, your reader’s going to get b-o-r-e-d.
